Writing Prompt: Life Changing

Sam gripped the handlebars of his motorcycle, the wind rushing against his visor as he soared down the open road. The exhilaration of the ride consumed him, offering a temporary escape from the weight of life. The adrenaline coursing through his veins gave him a bigger high than he could get in the back room of any club in the city.

But fate had other plans.

In the blink of an eye, a wallaby bounced out onto the black from the deep green scrub that lined the road. Panic replaced the joy as he instinctively slammed on the brakes, desperately trying to avoid the impending collision. However, it was too late. The impact sent him hurtling through the air, his body twisting and turning as he experienced an eerie moment of weightlessness.

As time slowed down, Sam’s mind cleared amidst the chaos. Instead of a fragmented montage of his life flashing before his eyes, a single memory burned brightly within him.

Vividly, Sam relived the heart-wrenching scene as he stood at his father’s funeral, surrounded by grief-stricken family and friends. The pain and regret etched deeply in his soul, as he realized the missed opportunities to connect and express his love for his father. Now, as he soared through the air, Sam’s confusion turned to understanding. This was the universe’s way of showing him the potential consequences of his reckless behavior, a stark reminder of the fragile thread that binds life and death.

As Sam continued his descent, his thoughts shifted to his own son, Jake. The image of Jake’s innocent face filled his mind, and a profound sense of responsibility weighed heavily upon him. He couldn’t bear the thought of leaving his son fatherless, just as he had been left behind. It was a haunting parallel that gripped his heart, and he realized that this was no mere coincidence.

The universe, karma, or whatever higher power governed such things had intentionally shown Sam this pivotal moment to awaken him from his self-destructive path. It was a jarring revelation, an opportunity to rewrite his story and create a legacy of love, rather than one of tragedy.

Sam’s mind now shifted to the future, determined now to slow down, to embrace each passing moment with deliberate care. No longer would he tempt fate or squander the time he had been granted. For the sake of his son and the memory of his father, Sam resolved to live a life of purpose and meaning.

As the ground raced to meet him, Sam’s mind was no longer clouded by fear but illuminated by newfound clarity. He accepted his fate, whatever it may be, and made peace with the choices he had made. The impact was imminent, but amidst the chaos, Sam felt an odd calm spread over his body. His helmet contacted the bitumen, and time returned to its blistering pace. He tucked and rolled, minimizing the damage. Light and sound came back to his consciousness with a roar before all went dark and quiet.

“Dad! Dad! Try and catch me!”

Sam activated the control of his powered wheelchair and aimed it towards Jake. Slowly, he rolled toward his son, the limitations of his movements a stark reminder of the accident. But within those limitations, he found a newfound appreciation for the simple joy of being with his son.

“You better watch out, mate! I’m going to get you!” Sam playfully called out.

Jake laughed and pretended to fall. “You got me Dad! You got me!”

Sam’s heart swelled with love as Jake climbed into his lap, giving him a tight hug. In that moment, Sam felt a surge of gratitude for the chance to rewrite his story and create a legacy of love and connection.

“Love you, Dad!” Jake cried out
